Hey cuz. This image reminds me of the Iranian urban youth I read about in one of my anthro classes. For over a decade now, as a way of resisting oppressive Islamic standards of dress (the forced compliance with the standards is oppressive, not the standards themself), young women have dressed in more fashionable ways. They still follow sharia (the Arabic word for the dress code) but they wear more colorful, form-fitting outfits, tie their headscarves more loosely, and wear makeup and accessories. Their resistance takes the form of "Westernizing" their culture. Although this woman isn't dressed how I described and is not actively subverting an oppressive regime through her dress (at least not an Islamic one), her manner of dress does represent a cross of cultures. I imagine it is this freedom that the young women I read about aspire to attain.

Cuz, thank you for your insight about this image. The first thing I thought of when I shot this was the Burka worn by Islamic women in Afghanistan. I'm glad this image provoked some thought about this matter...which it is intended to do. Good observation and comment.
